A custom resin chandelier hangs in each of four adjoining rooms at the Estonian Embassy in Berlin: Cloudberry, seventy-six hand cast berry forms gathered into ceiling clusters. The cloudberry itself is a Nordic forest berry, amber and translucent, found at the edges of bogs.
The commission came with the embassy’s renovation, when Aeris turned to us. Each resin chandelier is sized to its room: thirteen forms in the library, eighteen in the exhibition room, twenty-one in the concert room, twenty-four in the meeting room.
We pushed resin past its usual geometry, into shapes with real depth and irregularity. Each form is hand cast in a mould, in one of two sizes, then hand polished and finished. One piece takes about a week from casting to final polish, most of that curing time.
We shift the pigments across each cast resin chandelier, so every berry looks unique and plays with the light differently. Each form hangs from a thin metal cable; the visible coaxial line beside it feeds the 12V supply and carries no weight. Inside each berry sits a replaceable 1W LED at a warm 3000K.
The Cloudberry chandeliers hang like clouds of amber on their own wiring, in the embassy of a digital nation. The moulds and the pigments are ours, and we can cast a new set for another ceiling. See more of our indoor lighting.
