Two lit eggs of Nest II with the Old Town spires of Tallinn behind at blue hour

Nest 2

Nest II is an outdoor light installation in Noblessner, Tallinn: a large iron nest with two illuminated eggs on top of an old shipyard mast. When the shipyard became a new neighbourhood, a few of its masts were left standing. We wanted to give them a new use, and this is our second nest on one of them, after Nest I.

The idea came from a five-year-old’s drawing of eggs on a rusty mast, which became our first Nest, with three eggs in a nest of curved roof-edge trim. For the second light installation, closer to the sea, we wanted a wilder, more rugged nest, more like a stork’s own.

The branches are angle iron, like the mast’s own legs, woven into a nest more than 2.5 metres in diameter. Both eggs in the light installation are rotomoulded polyethylene, produced with the same mould as the three in Nest I. We set one of them at an angle, almost on its side, as if it were about to roll out.

By day, the dark nest shows against the sky at the end of the new streets that lead towards the sea. After dark, small lights inside the branches pick out the outline of the illuminated installation. The eggs are controlled separately and can change colour.

Two of Noblessner’s old masts are now a part of a light installation, and a few still stand empty. At un-like we would be glad to give an old mast a new use in your next project. See more of our outdoor installation projects.
